When a local farmer moved to Surrey, Mark found a steady stream of orders coming from that county where other farmers recognised highly skilled craftmanship when they saw it.

The forge at Charaton Cross, Mark Daniel , holding the mallet, repairs part of some farm machinery with the help of his staff. Annie Daniel, his daughter, is helping her brother, Jack to hold the horse. The two young men are . c 1910?

Over the years it was Pensilva that developed and not Charaton Cross, but the business continued to prosper. Mark DANIEL died about the year 1918 whilst living in Plymouth with his daughter Anne. The business had earlier been taken over by his son John and the latter was succeeded by his son Harold who in 1934 purchased from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners the old Pensilva Church School, in which premises he set up as a motor engineer, with a smithy in one convenient corner.

My main source of information about this family is my Great Uncle , Percy Perkins, who wrote accounts of the family in 1968 and 1971. The following edited narrative was written by him: I have omitted details of living relatives ,besides myself , my mother and my siblings. I am willing to share those details with anyone related to the family.

Mark Daniel and Descendants

ABOUT THE year 1850, Mark Daniel came from Polperro to Charaton Cross, Pensilva, to open in business as a Smithy. It was at the time of a boom era for the mines of Caradon. In 1844 the Liskeard to Caradon Railway was built. By 1853 there were 24 active mines around Liskeard. Caradon alone produced more than 300,000 tons of copper ore in 30 years.
Mark Daniel's particular business was general agricultural machinery work - repairs and manufacture of agricultural implements. When a local farmer moved to Surrey, Mark found a steady stream of orders coming from that county where other farmers recognised highly skilled craftmanship when they saw it.

By his first wife Mark Daniel had one son, William, who in later life moved with his wife Anna to Sutton, Surrey where he was employed as s Coach Builder. They became the parents of Sidney, Maggie, Stanley, Olive and Wilfred.. I had stayed with them in their Sutton home, but now only Maggie and Olive survive. Sydney, by the way, was in the GPO Telegraph service, Sutton and he was sent with a party of telegraph engineers to France to prepare lines of communication before war was actually declared on 4 August, 1914.

Maggie was trained and passed all her exams for School Mistress at the Goldsmith College, near New Cross, South London. For many years and until her retirement she was headmistress at an Infant School in Sutton. Olive was for some years on the clerical staff of Brocks the firework people when their offices were in the Sutton district. Later they moved out to Hemel Hempstead, Herts. Olive also joined them there but probably found the travelling between Hemel and Sutton rather trying and eventually gave it up.

Mark Daniel's first wife died at a comparatively early age. He remarried and this time without issue. His third wife was Jane Roose .Mark and Jane Daniel - at Charaton Cross - had five children: Tom, who died in early manhood, John, Jane, Anne and Margaret.

John married Polly Hawke and their family comprised two sons - Fernley who died in his early teens, and Harold (who is referred to above). Harold married Gwennie White of Pensilva and she helped him a lot in the business as well as in the home. Their daughter Cynthia went to the Guildhall School of Music in London with a beautiful soprano voice. Gwennie's early demise about 12 years ago was a great blow and shock to many of the Pensilva folk by whom she was loved and greatly respected.
Cynthia married Don March, a Flying Officer of B.E.A (see Footnote)

Jane married Thomas Charles Perkins, and their family at the beginning of the century comprised Olive, Rene, Tommy and Percy.

Olive died in 1961. She and Alfred Uglow were the parents of Fred (Junior School  headmaster) .

Rene married Fred Trethewey .

Tommy married Lizzie Williams. Their offspring were Ruby and Tommy ("Young Tom") Ruby married William Dunn while he was at Chatham on active service with the Royal Navy.
Ruby has devoted some fifteen years to the development of an educational college in Nigeria and has been accepted there even to the extent of her being made a Chief of one of the local tribes.
Young Tom and his wife Mary have four children - Judith, Tommy, Rosanne and Jane. He has served in the Royal Navy as Engine Room Artificer - thus carrying on the old trade of blacksmith - and is now in the small boat building business. During his service in Prince of Wales the ship was torpedoed and fortunately Tom was one of those saved. Judith has thoughts at the present time of obtaining a place at  University (after school terms are over) in order to study and qualify as an Archivist and it is for her benefit that I have prepared these notes.[ I did go on to get a BA in History but went into teaching. With hindsight, maybe I should have been an Archivist. I think Genealogy brings out the Archivist in me! - Judith]

Percy and Winnie were married at St Jude's Church, Plymouth, in December 1922. Winnie's father was James Walter Blackmore.

Anne Daniel married Joseph Sambells of Tokenbury Corner, above Pensilva. There the house that the Sambells lived in was known as Railway Cottage and line ran through at the back of their cottage. His father must have been employed by the railway company operating between Liskeard and Caradon. Both the father and the mother were well known to all our family and visits to Pensilva were usually accompanied by visits to Tokenbury Corner. Joe Sambells was another blacksmith by trade and for many years worked for the firm of Sir John Jackson Ltd in or alongside the Devonport Dockyard. He liked travel, and part of his service for the firm was, I believe, carried on in South Africa and later in Singapore. They had one daughter, May, born about the beginning of the century. They trio spent some years in Singapore but Annie and May returned a year or two before Joe and in the first few months a son Leonard was born - a fine healthy lad but he succumbed to some childish ailment and died at an early age. May married Leslie Johnson and died (without issue) at a relatively early age - perhaps around 55 years.

Margaret Daniel married Ned Foote of Callington. He was an experienced miner and engaged in the mines around Kit Hill, Kelly Brae. They had one son George who married and went to South Africa to live about 1930. No one here seems to have heard from him since.

Footnote. Harold Daniel's daughter Cynthia married a man called March. They had Juliet,  Tony, and Sarah. Tony lives at the house in Pensilva and runs the garage that still bears the name Daniel.
