| Extracts from Description The first part of the description is about the location, the church and the antiquities within. The Glasgow Caradon copper mine is in the parish. Sir Henry Bourchier Wrey , who is lord of the manor, Earl Compton, Digory Collins Esq., of Newton Ferrers, William Coryton of Pentillie Castle, Pillaton, David William John Horndon Esq., of Pencrebar, Callington, Miss Strode of Newnham Park, Plympton and William Pollard Esq., of Woolston, are the chief landowners. The soil is free and light clay; subsoil clay and slate. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 5780 acres; rateable value £5018; the population in 1891 was 1716. Parish Clerk, John Stetridge. Post Office. William Herring sub-postmaster. Letters through Liskeard at 8.30.am; dispatched at 4.20.pm. Pensilva is the nearest money order office & Liskeard the nearest telegraph office. Postal orders are issued her but not paid. Wall Letter Box. Charaton Cross, cleared 3.40.pm. National School (mixed) Church Town, built in 1829, for 80 children; average attendance 70; Walter Pugh, master; Miss Elizabeth Hawkin, mistress. Pensilva is a large village 2½ miles north-west, inhabited chiefly by miners, and has a school-room licensed for divine service. Here are Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels, and a place of worship belonging to the Methodist United Free Church. The population is about 1,300. Post & M. O. O., S. B. & Annuity & Insurance Office, Pensilva. – John Browning, sub-postmaster. Letters through Liskeard arrive at 8.0.am; dispatched at 3.25.pm. Liskeard is the nearest Telegraph Office.
