South Hill Parish

 Extract from the Post Office Directory 1856

 

Description. After details of exact location and a description of the church (see page on Church & Chapel) there is the following:-

There is a chapel for Wesleyans at Golberdon, in the parish. There is a large National School at Callington, maintained by subscription; there is a village school, for poor children, at South Hill, endowed with £5 per year from a farm in the parish; and there is a Sunday school held at the church. There are several copper, lead and silver mines in the neighbourhood, and an ancient British encampment called Catsonbury , in the parish of St Ive. The population, in 1851, was 730, and the acreage is 3,459. The soil is on the whole slate and trap; the sub soil is slate and trap rock. Lord Ashburton is lord of the manor, who, with William Strode, Esq., Captain Pode, and William Horndon, Esq., is chief landowner. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and pasture. There are charities of £5 yearly value to the school, and £10 yearly for the labouring poor who do not receive parochial relief; the £5 left by the Knill family, and the £10 by the Hawkings, of Treven, in the parish.

The chief hamlets are, Madus, Mornick, Golbordon and Treoigro. Manaton, Stockaton, Trefinick, Treven, Tregunnet and Trewassick are farms here.
