This is one of the very first
surveys where the monarch tried to determine the wealth of the
country. Money was needed to finance the war with France. The
assessment was in goods unless stated that it was on land.
The rector is noted as being non-resident and had land that made a profit of £28. p.a. South Hill and Callington were both under the care of curates and at South Hill this was Robert KNYTH who had a stipend of £5.6.8. and 10/- in goods. Two parts of the manor of Calilend (this manor cover a large part of South Hill) were now in the hands of the King as they had been forfeited by the Duke of Buckingham who had been found to have committed high treason. The steward was Richard Coryngton. |
