Farm Accounts 1862

Lower Rillaton

The following item is taken from a farm account book, found in a box of books at an auction. The book was kindly given to me by the finder Anne Taylor. There are several pages that date from 1857 to 1875 which deal with the Statton family of Lower Rillaton, Linkinhorne. The entries then jump to 1907 and continue through to 1931. These entries relate to the Nile family of Woodacott, Thornbury, Holsworthy. I have not yet discovered what is the connection between these two families and places.

William Statton was born around 1794 in Lesneweth parish. His wife Catherine born around 1796 and came from Lewannick just above Linkinhorne. The family seem to have moved around as they had four children baptised in St Cleather between 1818 and 1832. Two of these children Joanne (bp 1823)and Thomas (bp 1832) were with them in 1851. The family were not in Linkinhorne in 1841, but in 1851 were at Lower Rillaton when William was described as a farmer of 70 acres employing 3 labourers. His daughter Joanne married Thomas Isaac, a mason, in 1846 and she was residing with her parents on census night, also with them was her son. William is also listed as a farmer in the 1856 Post Office Directory. In 1861 William is described as a farmer of 160 acres, with him is his wife Catherine, son Thomas (described as Farmer's son) and grandson W. S. Isaac a fifteen year old carter.

One of their sons, John (bp St Cleather 1820) is shown in the 1873 Kelly’s Directory, 1878 Harrod’s Directory and the 1881 census as a farmer at Thornton, Linkinhorne. He married Elizabeth from St Cleer.

The son Thomas married Peggy from St Germans and in the 1871 they are in Linkinhorne with their 3 children. In the 1873 Kelly’s Directory Thomas is shown as a farmer at Trefrize.
