LINKINHORNE PARISH |
|
| LINKINHORNE (or LINKENHORNE) is a parish and a village, 4 miles north-west from Callington, 8 miles south-west from Launceston, and 9 miles north-east from Liskeard, in the Eastern division of the county, northern division of the hundred of East, Liskeard Union and county court district, rural deanery of the East, Cornwall archdeaconry, and diocese of Exeter, situated between the Inney and Lynher rivers. The church of St Mellor is a fine old building of freestone and granite in the Perpendicular style, has a tower 120 feet high chancel, nave, aisles, transcept, porch, and 6 bells. The registers date from the year 1576. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £378, with residence and to acres of glebe land. In the gift of William Hitchens, esq. and held by the Rev. Edward Marshall Kempe, B A of Exeter College, Oxford. There is a Free school for boys and girls, endowed with the interest of £7? consols, by Charles Roberts, esq. a Sunday School is held in the school-room. There are chapels for the United Methodist Free Church at Darley, Bible Christians at Downgate, Wesleyan Methodist at Rilla Mill, Lanhargy and Upton Cross, Baptists at Plushabridge and Primitive Methodists at Henwood. There are charities of £6 yearly value. There are several tin and copper mines in the parish, which are worked to considerable advantage, and the Caradon and Looe mineral railways runs to the mines. Here are the remarkable rocks called the Cheesewring, also granite quarries, belonging to the Duchy of Cornwall and worked by Messrs Freeman and Sons of Penryn, situated almost 6 miles north of Liskeard, the nearest market and borough town, The granite is carried direct by railway in spring waggons, at ten tons per waggon, by railway to Moorswaer and Looe, there shipped off in vessels from 50 to 170 tons per ship. There was a very large voluted column, 22 feet high , exhibited at the Crystal Palace from these quarries. Sir T Henry de la Beche says that the granite is of superior quality, being very hard, and of uniform blue colour. For its durability, no better proof is needed than the Cheesewring rock itself, having been standing from time immemorial in the position in which it now is without exhibiting any marks of decay. A fair is held on the 6th of December yearly for cattle, at Rilla Mill. H R H the Duke of Cornwall, who is lord of the manor, Sir J S Trelawny, bart, Francis Rodd esq., of North Hill, Mr Thomas Kittow, Mr John Dingle, and Mr John Dingley, are chief landowners. The soil is loamy, and the sub soil is clay slate. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, turnips and grass. The acreage is 7,804; gross estimated rental £9,036; rateable value £7,080; and the population in 1871 was 2918. | |
